Q&A: Wilson sets school relay record as freshman

By Izzy Mach

Davinia Wilson is a freshman at Batavia High School involved with track and field. Davinia and her relay team including Symone Houston-Davis, Sabrina Schlenker, Tori Ortiz broke the old 2015 and 2016 school record in the 400 meter and 800-meter relay.

Q: How does it feel to be a freshman breaking a record like this?

A: “It feels very unreal. When I came into high school track I would have never imagined I would accomplish all the things I have. However, I know this was something that I could not have done without my amazing relay team.”

Q: What/Who has helped you get to this point?

A: “My biggest motivator in track would probably be my dad. Ever since I was a little kid he would always sign me up for track meets and races. I would never have the heart for track like I do now if it weren’t for my dad always being there and helping me set goals for myself.”

Q: Are you going to continue this sport into next year?

A: “Absolutely.”

Q: Do you have a prep routine for good luck?

A: “I don’t have a prep routine really but I have 2 lucky necklaces and a ring that I have worn all throughout my season.”

Q: What is your favorite part of Batavia track and field?

A: “My favorite part about Track and Field here at Batavia would be all of the people involved. I have never been in a more supportive and loving environment ever in my life and it’s become the main reason I continue with the sport. Running and competing is all fun but if you don’t have the right people around you, I feel as if there is no point in doing it at all.”
