Everyone has different expectations as they transition from middle school to high school. Some people may think it will be awful, others may be excited, and some might not even know what to expect. Hopefully, these top 5 will give you a closer look into what high school is really like.
1. It is nothing like High School Musical.
The iconic High School Musical movies really boosted everyone’s expectations for high school. As a little kid, watching these movies made me want to fast forward into the future and be a high school student. That has to be by far my biggest regret ever. Let me tell you, it is only my first week in high school and there are no catchy songs, no fun choreography, and most importantly, no Troy Bolton. Trust me, I looked.
2. Freshmen really do get the hate.
It’s commonly known that sophomores, juniors, and seniors generally don’t like the freshmen. It’s nothing personal, it’s just the way it is. It’s like freshmen are stereotyped as the immature, annoying babies of the school. Even though the majority of freshman don’t fit that stereotype, it is still how a lot of upperclassmen view them.
3. There is not as much freedom as you’d think.
Going into high school, you may think now that you are out of middle school you can do whatever you want. Going on your phone during class without getting in trouble, eating whenever you feel like it, wearing whatever you want and not getting dress coded, the list goes on and on. In reality, most of those are not true. The majority of the teachers at BHS don’t allow you to go on your phone (unless for educational purpose), there are a very little amount of classes in which you are actually allowed to eat, and although dress codes are not as strict as they were in middle school, you should still use common sense when planning an outfit for school.
4. Grades actually mean something.
In middle school, whenever you do badly on a test or forget to finish your homework, you tend to think “It’s not that big of a deal, it’s just middle school.” When you enter high school, that is no longer the case. All your grades will depend on which college you go to, which will affect your future career and basically the rest of your life. So in conclusion, earn good grades.
5. The hot lunch is actually not bad.
I don’t know about you, but all of elementary and middle school, the hot lunch was not the best. Yes, there were a few items here and there that tasted fine, but overall I tried to avoid it. In high school, the food is actually decent and they have a much larger variety. Let’s just say I am finally not scared to eat the cafeteria food.
