Review: Is newly renovated ‘Syrup’ worth checking out?

By Ashley Marcukaitis and Courtney Houser

Syrup is a new upscale breakfast and lunch franchise and its newest location is on Randall road in St. Charles. This restaurant has been updated with a modern farmhouse style with white walls and light grey floors. We really enjoyed the food and service at Syrup.

The layout of the restaurant was social-distance-friendly and overall very clean. Employees were cleaning up often but not to the point where it was noisy or distracting. Our waiter was sweeping or wiping down tables when he wasn’t with us or at another table. We visited at a time that was not very busy so we did have great service and the food came out quickly.

There was a very large menu with many breakfast and lunch items to choose from. It was easy to read and included detailed descriptions along with nutrition facts.  There was an enormous coffee and drink menu including many different flavors and styles of coffee. The menu was also inclusive of special diet options because they had a vegetarian and gluten-free section. The Medditerean avocado toast was loaded with avocados, tomatoes, balsamic glaze, mozzarella, and fresh basil. The presentation of the dish was superb, but it was difficult to eat because the plate was so little and the toast was smothered in toppings. However, it was still very fresh and filling.

We had to try the traditional breakfast foods like eggs, bacon, and potatoes. The eggs, topped with cheese, did not look very appealing. The signature smoked bacon was exceptional. The smokey flavor was very strong so keep that in mind if you visit and don’t prefer smokey flavor. The best part of the meal was the diced potato hash browns. They were included as a side option for most of the meals and they did not disappoint. These potatoes were crispy and seasoned to perfection. The food at this restaurant was just as good as the atmosphere.

The service was exceptional. Our waiter was very attentive and made sure we were enjoying our experience. He offered his recommendations and was very helpful when it came to deciding what to order.

The location of Syrup is practical and the parking lot is spacious, just like the restaurant itself. We wish it was in a downtown area with more foot traffic; however, this location is definitely easier in terms of practicality because of parking, restaurant space, and accessibility.

After our visit, we would recommend Syrup to others. It was very clean and modern, and the service was great, too. Syrup had delicious food with a diverse variety of meals that were presented so well. The location is not what we expected but it is practical and gives a modern touch to the area. This place is ideal for a family breakfast, brunch with friends, or a lunch date. It was a great atmosphere and there were many different food options that everyone can enjoy.
