Grilled cheese modifications to spice up a classic fall treat

By Abby Barry

Do you ever have cravings for a gooey grilled cheese? Grilled cheese, a fall favorite, is the perfect comfort food that can be jazzed up to fulfill any palette.

A traditional grilled cheese sandwich may seem boring. Two pieces of bread and a sliced piece of American cheese. I must offer you a different perspective as a grilled cheese aspires to be more than this solemn sandwich. With the right amount of ingredients and the proper cooking technique, a grilled cheese can elevate itself from a casual Tuesday meal to a Saturday night main event at your local restaurant.

Here are some ways to jazz up this classic and make it a staple at your dining table.

Do you have a sweet side? The Sugar Network crafted a sandwich made of mozzarella, fontina, fresh basil, tomatoes, and honey. The sweet side of grilled cheese is not as well known but still well liked by many.

If you are traveling to Delafield, Wis. you can stop in Revere’s Wells Street Tavern to experience a carnivore’s twist on a vegetarian classic. Revere’s offers a grilled cheese with not one but two Angus burgers topped with Applewood smoked bacon. Cheddar cheese plays a supporting role in this sandwich, which shouldn’t be missed.

If you can’t make it to Wisconsin, you can experience something new and different at Cheesie’s Pub & Grub in Chicago. Cheesie’s offers a grilled cheese filled with homemade mac and cheese made with American and cheddar cheeses. This satisfying delight is served with a cup of tomato soup for dipping and is a classic that shouldn’t be missed.

If you were to ever find yourself in New York City go find Shopsins. They have a grilled cheese but with a twist. It starts with two pieces of french toast instead of regular bread. It is filled with cheddar cheese and bacon and topped with a poached egg. If you’re ever feeling like breakfast but want something different and you’re in New York try going to Shopsins.

Craving more breakfast food but in a grilled cheese mood? At Tom + Chee which is located in Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, and New Jersey, they have a grilled cheese that is made with two glazed donuts, a choice of cheddar, gouda, mozzarella, brie, or mascarpone cheese. You can also add caramelized bananas, blueberry compote, and ham to the wild sandwich.

If you’re tired of that boring old grilled cheese that you have when there’s nothing else in the fridge, try out one of these if you live near or try to make it at home. There’s a different grilled cheese for everyone’s satisfaction.
