Nine fun things to do downtown Batavia

By Joe Caltagirone

Riverwalk

The Riverwalk starts behind town hall and wraps around the dam for a picturesque view of the islands in the middle of the river. It also features wildlife plaques that give information on surrounding plants and animals.

Farmers’ market

Every Saturday starting in June and ending in October, farmers and creators of natural products sell their items at the Farmers’ Market. Starting in the morning, grab a bite to eat at one of the many vendors at the market and wander around looking for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Boating

The river is an excellent spot for water recreational activities. Bring your own boat and put it in the water in the depot pond, or rent a paddle boat from the station also by the depot pond. Whether or not the water is too high or low, the river can be a great place to boat.

Limestone

Whether it’s to grab a coffee, eat a quiche, or read a book, Limestone Coffee-house is a great place to hang out. With an extensive menu, enjoy lots of snacks while reading or working in the relaxing environment.

Kiss the Sky

Even if you don’t collect vinyl, Kiss the Sky is a great place to check out. They not only sell records, but they also have band t-shirts, sweatshirts, posters, and the occasional performance from a local band. If you are interested in vinyl, they have an extensive collection of new music and vintage jazz and rock albums.

Brianna’s

A recent addition to Batavia’s list of restaurants is Brianna’s Pancake House. A great place to go for breakfast or lunch, they are a typical diner with more than typical food. The menu has pancakes, crepes, and waffles, along with other breakfast dishes. It also has lunch options with sandwiches and burgers. It’s an excellent addition to restaurants in Batavia.

Bike Path

The Fox Valley has a range of bike paths throughout the area. Two of these paths go through Batavia, one on the west side of the river and one on the east. A bike ride to Geneva can be a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the weather. A trip from the start of the path to downtown Geneva is only two miles and can be biked in no time at all.

The Creamery

The Batavia Creamery is a popular ice cream shop on Island Ave. The shop has rotating flavors of ice cream with a variety of cone types. They can also cater cakes year round and make coffee and smoothies. On a hot day downtown, this stop makes for a delicious break from the heat.

The Albright Theatre

If you are interested in theatre, acting or watching, the Albright Theatre is a great place for you. Featuring a 100-seat theatre and a sizable stage, the theatre company puts on a variety of shows per season. Ranging from comedies to thrillers, they have a show for everyone.
